Martin Hall

I am an Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town and a partner in Artefact Transformation and Facilitation Services. I am fascinated by the opportunities in online learning, and have worked on projects ranging from literacy interventions for 12-year-olds, to online courses for working professionals, to the use of Learning Analytics to contribute to enhanced student wellbeing. I have recently founded the Connected Learning Studio as a place to explore new forms of digitally-enhanced learning.

I was Vice-Chancellor (President) of the University of Salford, Manchester, from 2009-2014. Before I joined Salford, I was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town (from 2002-2008) and the inaugural Dean of Higher Education Development at UCT (from 1999-2002). I am a Life Fellow at the University of Cape Town, a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.

My roots are in Historical Archaeology, and I have written about Southern Africa’s pre-colonial history, colonialism and its heritage, and about the ways in which our material world shapes our memories, senses of identity and perceptions of our futures.

I see the pervasive societal fractures we face globally as reflections of deeper splits within individual psyches, and my intention is to encourage individuals and communities to tread a path where committed social engagement is supported by radical personal transformation.

I facilitate contemplative creative processes incorporating meditation, yoga, conscious dance and intuitive art through Emerge, which I founded in 2017. These tools are offered to deepen self-awareness, awaken inner freedom and facilitate healing.

I am a Human Geography graduate, accredited yoga teacher, and qualified Dance Awake facilitator. I am currently enrolled in a 2-year postgraduate certification training in Mindfulness-Based Facilitation through the Faculty of Medicine at Stellenbosch University.

I am inspired by my own journey towards wholeness, which continues to be guided by my body's wisdom and creative capacity for healing.
